A man has been arrested in Dubai for allegedly buying and selling counterfeit Viagra, according to a statement from police. Thomas Wessels, 33, was arrested on Friday at the Dubai International Airport after allegedly selling fake versions of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra to customers from the Dubai Central Bus Terminal. The fake versions were labelled as a “pink Viagra”, which was not authentic.
Police said Wessels’ arrest marks the start of a investigation into the drug’s potential for abuse, and he faces charges of trafficking, trafficking in counterfeit goods, and illegal sale of unregistered medicines.
“Police are investigating the matter and are working with law enforcement to help in the investigation and to address the situation as soon as possible,” the statement said.
The drugs were sold on the internet to customers in Dubai Central Bus Terminal in June 2013.
The products were not authentic, but the seller’s name was listed on the package. Wessels was arrested on the same day in the case.
Wessels was given five days of detention after his arrest. On July 23, police conducted a raid on his home, where they found a number of fake Viagra pills, including the blue, diamond-shaped blue pill. Wessels also was arrested by Dubai authorities.
The drugs are manufactured by a company called Tugurgay. They were seized by the Dubai Police.
Police seized more than 1,000 counterfeit goods from Wessels’ home, including six “pink Viagra” pills and another “blue pills” for sale on the internet, including a yellow-tint-red diamond-shaped blue pill.
